As Sudden Angels Filled the Night

About the Song

Words by Toni Thomas
Music by Sally DeFord

Toni and I first met at a concert in Salt Lake City several years ago. She is an interesting, intelligent, compassionate, wonderful person, and on top of it all, she writes beautiful hymn texts. (See more of her work here.) Collaborating with Toni on this hymn was a real privilege for me. (I don’t generally write bona fide hymns, so it was also good practice!)

The audio track is piano and flutes with no vocals. Flute I plays with verse 3, Flute II plays with verse 4, then both play together for verse 5.

The flute obbligatos may be used with any verses, separately or together in harmony.

Accompaniment track:

Lyrics

As sudden angels filled the night
And glory spilt around,
The shepherds, bright with holy light,
Heard angel voices sound:
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice at Jesus’ birth!
No more may darkness rule the earth!

The angels fled, and all was still,
And all was dark once more.
While shepherds haste to seek the child,
One glorious star is born.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice at Jesus’ birth!
No more may darkness rule the earth!

The starlight falls in tender flood
Where Babe and Mary bide;
The silv’ry light brings peace and love
To all this holy night.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice at Jesus’ birth!
No more may darkness rule the earth!

Not far, another holy night,
Such angels will attend
A cross made bright by starry light,
A tomb where death shall end.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice at Jesus’ birth!
No more may darkness rule the earth!

When doubt and darkness gather strong,
Let never hope be far:
Remember strains of angel song
And silver light of star.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice at Jesus’ birth!
No more may darkness rule the earth!

This song is new to me and the backing track is lovely. Does a recording exist of it being sung? I learn a lot from others singing as I cannot read music very well

Is there one in musical number format? I only see hymn and flute formats.😕
