LyricsAbout the song...
Gethsemane lay still and dark
Creation watched in silent awe
As Jesus suffered his Father’s will
To satisfy unyielding law

He knelt in earnest prayer alone
His friends, o’ercome with sorrow, slept
Beneath the burden of grief he groaned
Beneath the weight of sin he wept

And with his blood so freely spent
He bought my soul; he paid my debt
What work of love was wrought for me
In the stillness of Gethsemane

“This bitter cup wilt thou remove?
Yet not my will, but thine be done.”
Behold his anguish and weep anew
For love of Christ, the sinless one

With his wounds my own are healed
My every pain o’ercome in his
My shame, my weakness, my grief untold
Find ransom in his priceless gift

For with his blood so freely spent
He bought my soul; he paid my debt
What work of love was wrought for me
In the stillness of Gethsemane

Carl Bloch

Would the violin obligato sound good with a flute?

Is there an audio version of the SATB for Gethsemane? I think my choir will “get it” easier if they can hear it sung. Thanks!

    Dear Sally,

I have wanted to contact you for years. I was so glad to see this forum tonight. Some years ago, my husband was called to be a mission president in a European mission. At first, we were unable to buy sheet music, but it was expensive and all in another language. We needed music that was affordable (free is very affordable!) and in English. One of our missionaries introduced us to your site, and we were able to run off music for our very talented missionaries to sing, perform. Every time I ran off the sheet music, I felt a little guilty. I at least wanted to thank you. I couldn’t believe you were giving this music away. And it was so beautiful. One of our missionaries sang “Gethsemane” at Easter time, and everyone was in tears. I still love it. So, thank you very much. Your contribution to our mission was invaluable.

I would love to hear an SATB version of this song. My daughter sang it on her mission and suggested it for our choir.

Is there a recording of the SATB version of this song?

Do you have a copy of the sheet music with the violin obbligato written with the piano accompaniment? It’s difficult for the violinist to know just when to come in without spending a lot of time figuring it out…..

    Hi Sally,

are you planning to put a low voice solo accompaniment on here sometime. I’m afraid I am a frustrated low voice alto so most of this is just too high for me. I love this song and have sung it several times for Easter at church and it really brings the spirit into the meeting, but can’t do it unless my accompanist is able to be with me as there is no one to play for me. If I could get an accompaniment it would enable us to perform it more often.

Love your music, thanks so much for sharing.

Beautiful song! Is the Allyse Taylor accompaniment track coming anytime soon? I would love to share this song at church, but Heather’s version is a little too high for my voice.

I have a friend who’s singing this and they asked me to play the obligato but I noticed that it’s a measure longer than the arrangement. Which measure is supposed to be cut?

Hi Sally, I downloaded and began to print out “Gethsemane” for SATB, but the pages that were coming out of the printer were for guitar accompaniment, not for the SATB. The preview looked right, with the different parts, but something went wrong between the file and the printer. The SATB version is the only file from your entire website that I downloaded, so I have no idea why or how I got the guitar version! In the place of the usual notes along the bars are these large letters, such as “HH HHG”, “U”s with the accent mark, “O”s with the diagonal slash, etc. Please help!

Hmmm…. I’m sorry it’s giving you trouble. What you describe (though it doesn’t sound like your typical guitar music!) is typical of a computer that’s having a hard time handling the PDF file. I usually kick the tires (IOW, restart the computer), then try the suggestions on the FAQ. Other than that… ???

Thank you! This song lyrically and musically is SO beautiful and powerful.

What an amazing song. Thank you! This has brought the spirit instantly! I hope I can share the same spirit!
