Three Relief Society Program Ideas

Submitted by Jane Ficiur, Alberta, Canada

I have to put in my recommendation for RS programs. I have loved RS since before I joined the church, I just didn't know it was RS I was looking for back then!!! I was actually president of a rural women's group that does (or did) similar things as RS - we learned new skills, had pot luck lunches, did charity work etc. Just no religion involved. My recommedations are as follows:

1. Women at the Well. I absolutely love this program. Our stake did it as a Women's Conference. The music was wonderful and very, very touching. Any LDS bookstore should be able to put you in touch with how to purchase the entire program as well as sheet music, tapes etc. Our Stake Presidency was so touched by the RS conference that they requested we re-do it as a stake fireside for priests, laurels and adults. The stake center was literally filled to overflowing from the front of the chapel to the back of the cultural hall stage with standing room only. I have heard of this being done other ways but I think our Stake had the best idea. The music between the readings was live with different numbers being assigned to each ward. (This helped to cut practice time.) During the musical numbers a slide show depicting the words of the song was shown.

2. The program is called "What Think Ye of Christ?" and is written by Rachelle Castor with the musical number by Diena Moore. It gives vignettes of 7 women telling how they feel about Christ. They are women from the scriptures and from Church history. Sister Castor's address is 1735 N. 1450 E. Provo 84604 if you are interested in more information. There is more info on this on the ideas for Christmas programs page.

3. The first year I was RS Pres. we had a quilt theme for our RS Anniversary party. We decorated with one quilt from each sister hung around the room on walls, quilt racks, room dividers - everywhere. The centerpieces were loaves of homemade bread on cutting boards with gingham ribbons tied on the handles. Also had gingham posie magnets at each place setting with a quilt quote such as "When life gives you scraps, make quilts" - about 20 different quotes which instigated discussion among the tables. We served dinner then started our program with everyone singing the Primary song "We are Different". We then had a guest speaker who compared RS to quilts - each piece is different, some are light, some are dark, different shapes etc. but all fit together to become a beautiful quilt. Such is RS - we are all different - different talents, different interests, different backgrounds etc. but we make a beautiful, loving group when we put all together. We then ended with a musical number - can't remember what it was but if I were doing it now I would use Sister DeFord's "My Sisters Hands" and "Make Us One". Both fit the theme perfectly.

Living Up To Our Potential

Maureen McIlwain

RS Presentation
THEME: - LIVING UP TO OUR POTENTIAL
The songs in brackets were played quietly while the narrator spoke.

(I Am a Child of God)
Living up to our potential...(pause) Who are we? What is our potential? "We are daughters of our Heavenly Father who loves us and we love Him." I am a daughter of God! My nature is divine! My potential is unlimited!

RS Choir: MY NATURE IS DIVINE (Janice Kapp Perry)

(Dearest Children God Is Near You - #96)
But I have so little to offer - how can I possibly achieve so much? The Lord said:

(Matthew 6:28)
28 Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he not provide for you, if ye are not of little faith.

He will provide for me, if I have faith.

RS Choir: CONSIDER THE LILIES - Roger Hoffman, arranged by A. Laurence Lyon

(Come Follow Me - #116)
I must seek the kingdom of God first in order to reach my potential. Seeking the kingdom of God....(pause) Following the Savior. "Come follow me" were His words, an invitation that comes to each of us. An invitation given over and over again. Let us live as He did, He who was the greatest among us. He taught us to love and to serve one another. He set the perfect example, and called: Come, follow me.

THE GREATEST AMONG US - Sally DeFord (A soloist sang the first verse, then the congregation joined in for the 2nd and 3rd verses - copies of the music were in the program)

(Where Can I Turn for Peace - #129)
Living up to our potential sometimes seems so distant, so far from our everyday, busy lives. How can we serve? How can we give? Pres. Monson said, "If you want to give a light to others, you have to glow yourself." First, we must fill our own wells. We need to drink of heaven's living water. We need to seek the Spirit, seek for understanding and wisdom, by study and by prayer. Then can we seek to give relief to the needy - both in body and spirit.

RS Choir: FILL THE WELL WITHIN - Sally DeFord

(Love One Another)
Service... charity... the pure love of Christ? Is this living up to our potential? N. Eldon Tanner, when deciding upon a message to deliver to the Saints said: "I contemplated conditions in the world that are causing so much unrest and unhappiness and then asked myself: What is our greatest need in order to meet these conditions and bring about a change so that we might enjoy peace and happiness?

My answer seemed to center on these two messages, taken from the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," and "Love one another."

In these two statements can be found the key to the solution of all those problems which are causing such misery and trouble for individuals, communities, nations and the world. By accepting and living according to these two doctrines, we could have joy unspeakable here and eternal happiness hereafter. These are the blessings for which we all should be seeking."

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God...(pause) Love one another. Putting the kingdom of God first involves forgetting ourselves in the service of others. As we serve others in this manner, we allow God to bless them, through us, and our divine nature blossoms as we develop such attributes as: faith, hope, charity, love, virtue, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, humility, diligence, joy, peace, gentleness, meekness and temperance. Is not this our potential as daughters of our Heavenly Father? Father, may I serve my brothers and sisters and in so doing, may I serve thee?

MAY I SERVE THEE? - Tammy Simister Robinson

Catch the Vision

A Visiting Teaching Song
Raquel Williams Lonas

To be a visiting teacher is a calling from on high.
Each sister must be contacted and here’s the reason why:
If we can’t even visit her or make a simple call,
We’ve lost a chance we won’t get back. We’ve really dropped the ball!

There was a gal who wouldn’t go because she was so shy.
She thought that if she rang the bell, she’d shrivel up and die.
But then one day she heard a phrase that calmed her fears and woes.
She wrote it down and studied it and this is how it goes:

      (CHORUS)
I’m on the errand of the Lord, His purpose to fulfill.
I receive His help and guidance when I try to do His will.
If I only catch the vision, I would never stop until…
I’m sick in bed, released or dead. My calling I’ll fulfill!

She says the ones she has to see all live too far away.
If she tried to visit all of them she’d surely spend the day.
But how else will she know if they are really all OK?
She needs to know this little verse - it isn’t hard to say.

    CHORUS

A mother of six children, when reporting she would whine,
“With PTA and soccer games, I just don’t have the time.”
But then one night she had a dream and now she’s changed her mind.
She memorized this little verse and now she’s doing fine!

    CHORUS

A sister that she has to see is older than the grave.
And hers are much too young to know of things like Burma-Shave.
We could learn and grow together, if they would just behave.
They need to sing this little song. Relationships we’ll save.

    CHORUS

Companions are a problem - it’s hard to coordinate.
You both consult your planners and you still can’t find a date.
You finally get it scheduled - then one of you is late.
But if you feel like giving up, these words just contemplate:

    CHORUS

    (much slower and reverently)
We’re on the errand of the Lord, His purpose to fulfill.
We receive His help and guidance when we try to do His will.
We need to catch the vision, see beyond the highest hill.
We’ll truly love our sisters. Our callings we’ll fulfill.
