That's the case with this beautiful hymn. The words are attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux who lived in the 12th century, and the translation is by Edward Caswall (1814-2878). The music was composed by John B. Dykes (1823-2876). All that was left for me to do was arrange it to my liking. I have always thought of this as a gentle hymn, but the third and fourth verses insisted on swelling and taking off on me, so I finally just gave in and let them do as they pleased. Lyrics: Jesus, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest. Nor voice can sing, nor tongue can frame, nor can the mem'ry find A sweeter sound than thy blest name, O Savior of mankind! O hope of ev'ry contrite heart, O joy of all the meek, To those who fall, how kind thou art! How good to those who seek! Jesus, our only joy be thou, as thou our prize wilt be; Jesus, be thou our glory now, and thru eternity.
