CD production on demand is a great service--when the company you deal with is up to the task. For the first year the defordmusic.com web site on CDROM was available, Homemade Music seemed to do just dandy. The second edition, however, proved to be more than they could handle. Released in November of 2002, the CD itself is still nicely burned and printed, and the labels and packaging are still great. But during the past year, customers have complained of slow delivery, sometimes waiting as long as a month after the order was placed.
The other end of the deal, of course, is that the author of the content (that's me...) is supposed to be paid for the product after Homemade Music deducts their fees. They claim to pay you the third week of each month, if the amount you are owed is more than $25. As of this writing (9/03) I have not seen a check from them since the release of this CD in November of '02. Sales stats are available on accounts with Homemade Music, but they are updated so infrequently as to be worthless. In March they informed me by e-mail that they owed me for 49 sales and would send a check within the week. Six months (and counting) is a heckuva long week.
I'm all for being patient with small businesses, but between the slow delivery times and the non-payment of money owed, I've (belatedly, I guess) reached the end of my rope. The 2003 CD Edition is being sold through Mixonic. They promise shipment within two business days, and will ship first class USPS, 2nd day air, or overnight. My own order from them (shipped first class) arrived approximately eight days from the day the order was placed. So far, so good. Let me know if you have problems with them.
