All Through the Night

Traditional Welsh; alternate and additional lyrics by Sally DeFord

You know, my only real contributions to this lovely lullaby are the extra lyrics for the third verse and the obbligato for two violins. Well, that... and convincing James that it was about time to sing something in his native Welsh. Never mind that he has lived in England for most of his life... never mind that his Mum and Nana had to coach him on the pronunciation... I wanted to hear it!

If you're like me, when you look at written Welsh (see below) you think, "Nope. Not possible." (What's even worse... try putting it in a score where you have to divide words with *no* vowels in them...yikes!) Well, fortunately I managed to coerce James into working his magic on it. I hope you enjoy actually hearing it as much as I did.

Lyrics

Sleep, my love, and peace attend you
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send you
All through the night
While the drowsy hours are creeping
While the weary world is sleeping
I'll be here, my love-watch keeping
All through the night

Holl amrantau'r sêr ddywedant
Ar hyd y nos
Dyma'r ffordd i fro gogoniant
Ar hyd y nos
Golau arall yw tywyllwch
I arddangos gwir brydferthwch
Teulu'r nefoedd mewn tawelwch
Ar hyd y nos.

Sleep, my love, and heaven hold you
All through the night
In the arms of love enfold you
All through the night
While the gentle starlight's streaming
While the moon is softly gleaming
I'll be near to guard your dreaming
All through the night
